Field hockey goes 1-2 on East Coast trip

September 18, 2011

The MSU field hockey team (3-5) split two games on the East Coast this weekend, losing to Maine 4-1 on Saturday but recovering on time to best Providence 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

MSU was led by freshman forward Abby Barker, who recorded two goals in the match against Providence, including the eventual game-winning goal, which put the Spartans in the lead in the second half. Barker was perfect in the game, taking two shots on goal and scoring on both. Junior forward Jessica Lindner also scored and recorded an assist for the Spartans.

Sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy tallied four saves in the match, allowing the Spartans to hold on for the win. Cassidy also had six saves in the loss to Maine.

The young squad, which features nine freshman players, has struggled under first-year head coach Helen Knull, but the team gradually is beginning to find its identity. Knull has stressed that the team has been working to improve its own game during practice rather than focusing on each opponent individually.

The Spartans will play their first game in the state of Michigan on Wednesday when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas.
