Anti-coal group to hold kickoff

January 23, 2011

Members of the MSU Beyond Coal organization will hold a semester kickoff meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 224 Erickson Hall.

Officials hope to inform attendees of the organization’s goal to convince the university to make a commitment to transition from coal to clean, renewable sources of energy, said Eric Price, the group’s spokesman.

MSU Trustee Dianne Byrum will be the keynote speaker at the event.
Byrum will be discussing the use of coal on campus, he said.

“It’s a way for us to get our voice out — through not just the voice of the students — but someone who is really influential on campus,” Price said.

This semester, campaign members plan to write letters to the media and meet with administration officials to discuss MSU’s use of coal, he said.

Upcoming plans for events being considered include a rally and a movie screening, but Price hopes those who attend the meeting will contribute other event ideas.
