I felt inspired to write a letter drawing attention to the alternative club sports here at MSU and the achievements the members are making. I myself am a member of the MSU women’s rugby team, which is a club sport that recently has been receiving a lot more media attention due to its recent addition to the Summer Olympics.
Numerous times, club sports at our university achieve great accomplishments with little acknowledgement from The State News. The particular event that motivated me recently was a member of our team, microbiology senior Adetayo Mafe, was listed on the USA rugby site as a reserve competing right now to be a member of the 2010 USA National Women’s World Cup Team.
Only 46 women across the nation were listed, and following another set of tryouts they will cut the list down to 30 for the final USA team. This isn’t Adetayo’s — or Tayo, as our teammates call her — first accomplishment. She competed in the Under-20 USA National Women’s Team in South Africa (the resulting match was the U-20 USA team’s first international win), a feat that many athletes can never achieve.
Although I understand other more widely watched sports obviously will receive more attention, I can’t help but think that my friend and teammate deserves more from The State News and fellow students at the MSU community. Because not only is she accomplishing so much on the field, but she’s also a dedicated microbiology major, loves dancing and is one of the most humble people I have ever met.
Obviously, all this seems amazing; however, some things many people don’t realize is that with all these flights for tryouts and camps, she is forced to pay out of pocket, along with her being an out-of-state student. I just wanted to raise attention to individuals who are making immense achievements, with microscopic acknowledgement, particularly my teammate — or better known as my friend, Tayo.
