2 additional Spartans facing assault charges

Two more MSU football players have been suspended and face assault and battery charges stemming from an alleged November altercation with an MSU fraternity.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Myles White and junior defensive tackle Oren Wilson face assault and battery charges as well as conspiracy to commit assault and battery, a clerk at East Lansing’s 54-B District Court said. Wilson faces two counts of assault and battery, while White faces one.

White and Wilson do not have arraignments scheduled as of Tuesday, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said. Dunnings said the prosecutor’s office submitted the charges Monday for White and Wilson, and the two have to turn themselves in for arraignment.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said MSU police still are investigating the incident. She directed all questions to Dunnings. Until the investigation is completed, Dunnings said he does not know whether more people could face charges resulting from the incident.

MSU head coach Mark Dantonio said in a statement that White and Wilson were suspended indefinitely from all football-related activities.

“As with the previously suspended players, their status with the team will be re-evaluated on a case-by-case basis as their legal issues are resolved,” he said in a statement.

The charges stem from a Nov. 22 altercation in Rather Hall, where witnesses said 15 to 20 football players allegedly attacked members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity. Witnesses said players came into the lounge area of Rather Hall, where the fraternity was holding a potluck, and assaulted some members of the fraternity.

Fraternity members said a fight that broke out Nov. 21 at a fraternity party at The Small Planet, 16800 Chandler Road, might have led to the Rather Hall altercation.

White was suspended before the Jan. 2 Valero Alamo Bowl for a violation of team rules. He also has been charged with urinating in public and minor in possession in the early morning hours of Nov. 22 at The Small Planet.

Wilson was a starter in the bowl game and previously has not been publicly connected with the fight.

Pretrial conferences originally scheduled earlier this month were moved to an unspecified date in February for eight other players — former junior safety Roderick Jenrette, former sophomore running back Glenn Winston, sophomore wide receiver Fred Smith, sophomore wide receiver B.J. Cunningham, junior wide receiver Mark Dell, redshirt freshman linebacker Jamiihr Williams, junior offensive lineman J’Michael Deane and junior cornerback Chris L. Rucker.

Former MSU running back Ashton Leggett pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery Jan. 14 and faces a maximum of 93 days in jail.

Three MSU players, including Leggett, are transferring to different schools, Dantonio said earlier this month. Leggett will transfer to Illinois State University, redshirt freshman defensive end Jamiihr Williams will transfer to Northeast Mississippi Community College and redshirt freshman linebacker Brynden Trawick will transfer to an unknown school, Dantonio said.

He added that sophomore defensive tackle Ishmyl Johnson no longer is on the team, but did not specify why.

The other eight players charged for the altercation have been allowed back into the MSU football facilities, Dantonio said.

Neither Johnson nor Trawick have been charged in connection with the Rather Hall incident.
