Spartans to face Texas Tech in Alamo Bowl

MSU will be without 8 suspended players

December 6, 2009

Head coach Mark Dantonio and team captains talk about the team’s Alamo Bowl berth. It is the third straight year that the Spartans have made a bowl game. The last time the Spartans made three consecutive bowls was 1995-97.

The MSU football team will meet Texas Tech in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2, 2010, Athletics Director Mark Hollis announced Sunday night.

It will be MSU’s third straight bowl game. The Spartans played in the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl, losing to Boston College, and the 2009 Capital One Bowl, losing to Georgia. It’s the first time MSU has played in three consecutive bowls since 1995-97.

“It’s an opportunity to go back to our third straight bowl game,” MSU head coach Mark Dantonio said. “It’s something we shot for as we moved into the midpoint of this season.”

The Spartans last appeared in the Alamo Bowl in 2003, a 17-3 loss to Nebraska.

“We’ve been there before and we’re looking forward to going back,” Hollis said.

The Red Raiders, out of the Big 12 Conference, finished the season 8-4 and 5-3 in the Big 12. They finished the season winning 3-of-4 games, including a 41-13 stomping of Oklahoma.

The game will begin at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast by ESPN.
