Linebacker Jones named All-American

By Chris Vannini (Last updated: 12/04/09 12:33am)

The awards for junior linebacker Greg Jones kept coming Thursday, as Jones was named an All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

Jones also was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year by the media about a week ago.

Jones led the Big Ten and is third in the nation with 141 tackles. He also was fourth in the Big Ten in sacks with nine.

It is the second straight year the Spartans have had an All-American in some form. Last season, running back Javon Ringer was named an All-American by The Associated Press.

The last time the Spartans had an AFCA All-American was in 2002, when wide receiver Charles Rogers was named to the team.

Jones’ on-the-field award coincides with several off-the-field awards for the Spartans. Senior wide receiver Blair White recently was named an Academic All-American and, along with 10 other teammates, was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team.

It’s too bad he’ll be in the NFL draft this year (if he’s smart).

I really hope Jones wasn’t involved in that divine nine beatdown at Rather Hall. When he spoke after some games on ESPN, he sounds like he’s got a heart of gold.

Congrats Jones, that’s how you play defense, take notes Rucker!

Congrats!

You deserve it Jones. Sorry your teammates had to ruin a great year for you. Keep up the hard work – spartan nation wouldn’t hold it against you if you decided to go to the NFL. You deserve the best and right now some of your teammates aren’t giving that to you. It’s been a pleasure watching you play every game this year.
