But I do know MSU students. And I do know a thing or two about the city and MSU students. Almost all MSU students are good, responsible people. Sure you are college students. So were a lot of us old fogeys (I remember a few years back being interviewed by a high school student about the ’60s and she said I was the only person among her parents’ friends who admitted to doing what most of us did in the ’60s). For all the complaints students have against law enforcement, for the most part it really does try not to overreact to students breaking the law. Cops are human, and the policies need fine tuning, but if you look at something like not enforcing underage drinking, the cops are actually breaking state law (unless it gets changed). And, believe it or not, a lot of what is done when folks get drunk is actually protective. That said, there are a small percentage of MSU students who are bad citizens. I get tired of trash blowing into my yard because some student renters can’t have the common decency to put out trash bags when they party—I don’t care about the party, and who is drinking underage, I care about the trash. And the small handful of students who insist on cheating when professors try to teach in ways that encourage creative thinking and not heavy-handed testing spoil it for everybody. In my experience, most of students who behave badly are spoiled brats from well-to-do families, Bush-clones I call them. Not all kids from well-to-do families are spoiled brats, but I can’t remember a students who felt privileged to have the opportunity for an MSU education, instead of entitled to it, who was a problem (I suppose revenue sports types, but I can only think of one I’ve dealt with who was a spoiled brat). Sounds like the “bombers” were spoiled brats with a track record. I don’t think the state can afford to put them in jail and not a lot of point. But I would give them hefty fines and lots and lots of community service and make sure this is on the record. Actually community service and a record is how I would handle things like persistent littering and other nuisance behaviors. If law enforcement got its act together (it isn’t) and figured out who the small number of bad apples are and hit them hard, then most of the time a slap on the wrist would suffice for everyone else, including some of the idiots who think it is cool to do Cedar Fest rioting but really aren’t trouble makers at heart. Law enforcement needs deterrence, but it needs to be applied with a scalpel not a chain saw. In this case, these particular students need to be deterred from ever doing anything like this again, but I don’t see this as being something where deterrence needs to scare the rest of the student body, because who else does this? Now some tough community service for persistent littering at parties would, I hope, send a message to everybody who acts that childishly. In order for prosecutors to ensure a winning record, they overcharge and then offer plea deals. However, this is not to minimize the the severity of what these kids did. Their actions had potential to seriously hurt or kill someone, including themselves. However, the test will be if these kids who’ve enjoyed a life of entitlement will actually feel that any court has the power to compel them to report to a probation officer or do community service.
