Volleyball team loses sixth straight

October 25, 2009

The MSU volleyball team had another close match this weekend, but were unable to stop a five-game slide in falling 3-2 at No. 9 Minnesota Friday.

The Spartans had a 2-1 lead entering the fourth set, but Minnesota roared back with a 25-17 win in the fourth set and capped it with a 15-9 finish in the fifth set.

The Spartans were led by sophomore outside hitter Becca Zlabis’ 16 kills and 13 digs and junior libero Allyson Karaba’s 28 digs.

MSU now has lost six straight, but might be able to build off a close loss against the Golden Gophers, one of the top squads in the Big Ten.

MSU began the season 12-0, but has slipped to 2-8 in the Big Ten and 14-8 overall. Head coach Cathy George said last week her team needs to do a better job of terminating balls and coming in with the mentality to dominate.

“We’re making it a tough road,” George said. “We have to stop hoping it happens and coming in to dominate and not coming in and see what happens. We have to dominate from the start.”

MSU continues play this weekend with home matches against Iowa and Wisconsin.
