Unbeaten in conference remain at 2 after weekend
By Chris Vannini (Last updated: 10/11/09 9:35pm)Iowa 30, Michigan 28 — The Hawkeyes defeated the Wolverines 30-28 Saturday night to move to 6-0, their best start since 1985. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi went 20-for-38 passing for 284 yards and two touchdowns, rebounding after his first pass was intercepted and returned for a U-M touchdown. U-M (4-2, 1-2) relied on its running game as the offense ran for 195 yards but only passed for 124. Freshman quarterback Denard Robinson attempted to drive the Wolverines to another comeback victory in the fourth quarter, but was intercepted with less than one minute remaining, sealing the Hawkeyes’ victory.
Penn State 52, Eastern Illinois 3 — Penn State rolled over Eastern Illinois 52-3 on Saturday to move to 5-1 overall. Nittany Lions quarterback Daryll Clark went 13-for-19 passing for 234 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Eastern Illinois quarterback Jake Christensen, a transfer from Iowa, went 13-for-25 passing for 137 yards and one interception. The Nittany Lions outgained Eastern Illinois 553 to 206 in total yardage but had less time of possession.
Ohio State 31, Wisconsin 13 — After an even first half that went back and forth, No. 9 Ohio State blew past Wisconsin in the second half en route to a 31-13 victory, thanks to its defense and special teams. The Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0) only had 184 yards of offense, compared to 368 for the Badgers (5-1, 2-1). Ohio State only had one offensive touchdown, a 32-yard pass from quarterback Terrelle Pryor. The Buckeyes had two interceptions returned for touchdowns and a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Wisconsin held the ball for 42:47, while Ohio State had possession for only 17:13.
Northwestern 16, Miami (Ohio) 6 — Northwestern was able to hold on to defeat winless Miami (Ohio) in ugly fashion, 16-6. The Wildcats (4-2, 1-1) scored on two Mike Kafka runs and the Northwestern defense did the rest. Miami (0-6, 0-2) had 302 yards of offense but turned the ball over four times. Kafka went 15-for-31 passing for 191 yards and one interception and led the team in rushing with 53 yards on 15 carries.
Minnesota 35, Purdue 20 — The Boilermakers built a surprising first quarter lead but fell apart in the second half, losing 35-20 to the Golden Gophers. Purdue (1-5, 0-2) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Minnesota (4-2, 2-1) made some clutch plays down the stretch and pulled away in the second half. The Boilermakers had 402 yards of offense, including 299 in the air, but Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott threw two interceptions.
The Gophers scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 47-yard return of a blocked field goal attempt and built a 35-13 lead. The Gophers only passed the ball 10 times while running for 207 yards as a team.
Virginia 47, Indiana 7 — The Cavaliers’ offense exploded against the Hoosiers, winning 47-7 in the only regular season game this year between the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference teams. Virginia (2-3, 1-0) came into the game averaging 272 yards per game but put up 536 on Indiana (3-3, 0-2). The Cavaliers’ offense was balanced, passing for 308 yards and rushing for 231 while mounting its highest output in five years.

10/12/09 9:23amWay to make a statement for the B10 Indiana. Virginia has lost to a 1-AA team at home this year. I’m tired of hearing people rip on the B10, but with stuff like this (and us losing to a MAC team) we keep giving them ammunition.
