No-preference freshmen Nathan Urban and Eric Jazdzyk have been best friends since second grade. Although they live together in a single room in Landon Hall, they have covered the walls, top to bottom, with posters that show their similar interests.
The State News sat down with Urban and Jazdzyk to discover how their love of posters has come to define their room.
The State News How would you describe your room?
Nathan Urban I would describe it as us — it represents what we do, what our interests are and what makes us comfortable. We accustomed it to what we like to do and what we feel comfortable being around.
SN Where did you get all the posters?
NU They are posters I’ve collected over the years. A lot are from my house. It’s a collection of both our posters. Snowboarding is something we do as a hobby. Bands, what we listen to. Movies, what we watch. We just collected them through either buying them or getting them free from other people.
SN Do you wish you had more space?
NU Yeah, If space was an option, we would take more, but the thing is, we were just put in this room. For a lot of people in our dorm, this is a single room. We were put into it as a double because we are freshmen and we requested a room together. With more space, we’d have a lot more to work with, but I think for the space we were given we’ve done a pretty good job.
We both know each other and that’s what’s made this small space so nice for the two of us because we know each other’s comfort levels — what we can do and what free space we need. Since we are such good friends and we know each other, this space has been easier to deal with.
Eric Jazdzyk This was a single last year.
SN How do your posters represent you?
EJ They represent what kind of music we like. We have a lot of music posters. We have snowboarding posters and we both snowboard. There’s a 007, we both like Bond movies. It’s pretty much stuff we really enjoy watching, listening to, different activities.
NU It’s a good way for people to understand us, as catchy as that is to say. They’re all posters we had in our rooms, so making the transition – coming here being freshmen and stuff — it’s familiar thing we used to see every day. It’s comforting.
Some rooms you go into and don’t get that cozy feeling. It’s a small room but when you put the posters up, it feel comfortable and it feels more spacious when the walls are covered. It doesn’t seem so bland.
SN What’s the oldest poster you have?
NU I would have to say either the snowboarding ones or the Blink-182 music poster. A lot of them date back probably four or five years. I’ve had them for a while.
SN What are your favorite posters?
EJ l like our James Bond poster, personally. I like our (MSU) flag a lot too. It’s something for Michigan State in our room.
NU I would have to say the White Stripes poster. The White Stripes are one of my favorite bands. I definitely like having that one up so when people ask me what’s my favorite music.
A lot of people recognize that White Stripes poster. (Also) the snowboarding. It kinda reminds me in the summer, fall and spring, what I miss and what I want to do. It’s nice having those up.

SN How many posters did each of you contribute?
NU It’s probably more of mine just because I’ve been more into the poster thing. When I saw the room I was able to look at the room and be like, ‘I have a poster for this spot.’ Posters have been something I was always interested in.
EJ I had a few at home but not as many as (Urban) did. It worked well because we pretty much have the same interests anyway. I listen to the White Stripes, I listen to Blink-182. We listen to the same kind of music and we both snowboard.
SN If money was no object, how would you change your room?
NU Maybe a larger TV. It’s hard to say because with unlimited money there’s a lot of options. Options we haven’t explored yet. We probably would just add more to it.
SN How did you guys get put in this small room?
NU We requested Mason/Abbot for our first and second choice and then Landon was my third choice and that’s where we were put. There’s a bunch of doubles that are bigger than this but there are a few singles. We definitely got the smallest room that’s a double.
SN Did you go to the poster store on Grand River Avenue to get any of these?
NU We have a couple from the poster sale they had at the Union. We did pick up a few posters from there. We really just brought a lot of things from our rooms that were hung on the walls or set around the room. We really just packed as much as we could to maximize it.
SN Is your room at home just a white wall?
NU I had every inch of my walls covered with posters back at home, so now you can see a lot more of the walls but it’s definitely a good trade-off. When I come here and go home, I still have posters up but it’s a little different. It’s something I had to rearrange and get used to.
