A former East Lansing Police cadet was killed in the line of duty Sunday, while working for the Oak Park Police Department.
Mason Samborski, a four-year officer with the Oak Park Police, was shot early Sunday morning when he was following up on an investigation after a traffic stop, according to a press release from the city of East Lansing.
Samborski began as a part-time ELPD cadet in March 2001 and was promoted to be a Parking and Code Enforcement officer in September 2002. He was awarded the ELPD’s Civilian of the Month award twice in 2003.
Samborski left East Lansing in May 2005 to join the Oak Park Police Department.
“Mason did superior work,” East Lansing Police Chief Tom Wibert said in a statement. “He was a very pleasant person to work with and a true asset to this department. He will be sorely missed by our family.”
More than 30 members of ELPD plan to attend Samborski’s funeral on Wednesday, Dec. 31, in Brighton, according to the press release.
Visitation hours are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Road in Brighton. The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the church.
