Spartans move on to second round of NCAA Tournament

Heyboer scores twice in win

By Sean Ely (Last updated: 11/14/08 7:02pm)

The MSU women’s soccer team got to Wisconsin-Milwaukee just nine minutes into Friday evening’s contest in South Bend, Ind., en route to a 2-1 win to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Perhaps more impressive than gaining the victory is that fact that MSU scored not only one goal on the road, but two against the Panthers, now posting a 7-1 all-time record against the team.

Freshman forward Laura Heyboer netted both goals. Heyboer’s first goal was the first Spartans goal on the road since Oct. 17, when the Green and White defeated Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. Also, it was just MSU’s fourth goal on the road since Aug. 31 and the Spartans have only scored four goals, both home and away, since Oct. 17.

But they fought through those negative statistics and move onto the second round to battle the winner of the Toledo-Notre Dame game at noon on Sunday.
