For the first time in the history of the men’s soccer program, a Spartan has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team.
Senior forward Doug DeMartin earned the award Wednesday after being selected to the Academic All-District IV first team, which made him eligible for All-American recognition.
DeMartin is pursuing a finance degree and currently holds a 3.91 grade-point average.
Last week, DeMartin was named the Big Ten Player of the Year after leading the Big Ten with 17 goals — good for third in the nation.
The Mason native has scored 38 career goals, which places him fifth in the MSU record books.
MSU head coach Joe Baum credits DeMartin for working hard both on and off the field.
“Our players were overjoyed for Doug DeMartin,” Baum said. “They were euphoric. For these players to be so excited for Doug says a lot about the great team spirit here.”
