Issues brought up in Tuesday’s ASMSU Academic Assembly meeting centered upon textbook costs and students struggling to pay for them.
Christopher Kulesza, chairperson of the assembly, spoke in his State of the Assembly speech about the need to keep the organization’s commitment to fight for a watchful eye on what books are used in classes to help reduce the amount of books students need to buy.
Along with the speech, the board also proposed two bills regarding the high cost of books. An effort to lobby bookstores to carry older editions of books if the professor determines they are still valid passed 23-0.
Another bill, which would require professors to place a minimum of three books required for a class in the library for student use, was suspended until the next assembly meeting.
ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
Also included in Kulesza’s address was a hope of expanding the assembly from about 30 members to 35 and the continuation of the Last Lecture Series. He proposed lecture events in February and April, along with a faculty book signing.
“It is my sincere belief that Academic Assembly can be a constant source of academic programming to enrich the minds of our student population,” Kulesza said.
Kulesza also said he will review the ASMSU trip to Washington, D.C., to see if the lobbying done on the trip would be as successful as a full year-long effort. If not, the possibility of smaller, but more frequent trips could be discussed.
A call to respond to the Executive Committee of Academic Governance’s integrity on scholarships, grades and retake policies also was issued.
Kulesza said he hopes to have bills written and passed through the Academic Assembly to send to the Executive Committee in order to help the student body as a whole.
Updating the Academic Freedom Report, which protects against unfairness in the classroom and students rights, was also brought up in the meeting. The report, which hasn’t been updated since the 1980s, needs to be updated to fit in with the current world, Kulesza said.
