This year, tailgaters are going to have to make an extra stop to get their tennis court parking pass — the Internet.
ASMSU will require students to reserve their tailgating passes before paying for them in person at its office, 307 Student Services.
ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
To reserve a parking spot at the south tennis courts, must now visit www.asmsu.msu.edu to reserve the spot prior to buying a $15 pass.
After making reservations, tailgaters must pick up the pass in person at the ASMSU office, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Kyle Dysarz, ASMSU’s Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, said the method of buying tailgating spots has changed almost every year.
In the past, a lottery system has been held, as well as a first-come, first-serve basis.
Michael Webber, ASMSU’s Student Assembly chairperson, said the environmental benefit of using less paper should help students warm up to the tailgating change.
“A lot of people tend to not like change with things, but I think this is more beneficial,” he said.
“It cuts down on the amount of paper used and it speeds up the process.”
If tailgaters don’t have Internet access, they can still pick up passes at the ASMSU office.
Again this year, a group of chosen tailgaters at each home game will be named “Meijer’s Tailgate Car of the Week.”
The standout fans will have their photo on the Spartan Stadium big screen and will receive a $50 gift certificate to Meijer.
Tonight, ASMSU’s Student Assembly finance committee will present three bills. One bill will request to almost double tailgating funds from $8,000 to $15,000.
MSU’s Physical Plant, which is in charge of cleaning up after the home football games, has billed ASMSU $1,000 per home game in the past.
Although Webber wasn’t sure if the Physical Plant plans on charging again this year, Student Assembly still will request the additional $1,000 for the seven games.
The initial $8,000 budget goes to providing tailgate entertainment, such as blow-up games and a live DJ.
But ASMSU isn’t only looking to help make tailgating run more smoothly – they’re hoping to shine up their offices as well.
The second bill is requesting around $3,000 in funds for two empty office rooms, which ASMSU hopes to furnish with four desks and four chairs.
Since the rooms were previously home to other organizations on campus, there is no furniture in the offices.

Sandte Stanley, Academic Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, said the desks aren’t the most luxurious.
“The office equipment and desks are all very expensive,” said Stanley, a psychology senior.
“We plan on keeping all the furniture for a very long time.”
ASMSU spent $12,443.36 on office furniture and asbestos abatement in spring 2007. But Stanley is sure this semester’s furniture request is necessary.
“I found the cheapest furniture that would be sturdy enough to hold up,” she said. “It’s actually very boring.”
