Given the events of the past two weeks, it’s time we take a break from the infringements on the supposed “right to party” and focus instead on a disturbing trend affecting a more fundamental right: voting.

“Many college students are already familiar with the infamous “Rogers’ Law” that requires Michigan voters have the same address on their voter registration cards and driver’s licenses. During the past several years, this law has stood as a major barrier to students voting at college.”

This should not stop any MSU student from registering to vote in East Lansing. Fears that an address change will disqualify a student from financial aid or parental helath care benefits are unfounded. As long as a student qualifies as a dependent on their parent’s 1040 they should be eligible for some level of aid, voting address not withstanding. It makes sense to vote where you live 8-9 months out of the year.

Kevin, isn’t the issue that it costs money to change your driver’s license, and that requiring college students to update their license every year (because most move every year) amounts to a poll tax? Or at least isn’t that what people are arguing?

Peter,

Actually there is no cost associated with changing your address on your driver’s license. If you fill out a “Voter Registration Application and Michigan Driver License/Personal Identification Card Address Change Form” the Secretary of State will mail you a sticker that can be placed on the back of your license indicating the change of address. You don’t need to get an actual new license. You can print the form using this link:

	http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MIVoterRegistration_97046_7.pdf

Having said that, there is no doubt that “Roger’s Law” is unnecessarily burdensome on student voters and does reduce student registration and participation. Kevin is right that fears about health insurance, financial aid, etc. have not materialized since this law was enacted, but it is the widespread fears themselves, in combination with student voter intimidation on campuses that makes that keeps students from registering. There are bills in the State House and Senate to repeal “Roger’s Law” and they need vocal support from MSU (and other university) students.

	Ha! That was incredibly clever.

Meanwhile, I bet you’re the three-time runner-up for the coveted prize of Guy Most Mistaken For a Walking Mushroom.

Just a couple more pounds, Champ/Champion. You too can be forklifted into the winner’s circle!

Actually, what should happen is the creation of login accounts on this forum. That way flamers, spammers, sock puppets and people who think they’re being clever by coming up with silly names – or saying that columnists look like old lesbians – can be flung to the curb.

Unfortunately, that would probably decrease forum traffic by about 75% : (
