Candidates' debate choice disappointing, less crucial
In a country that prides itself on the separation of church and state, I was surprised to find that the Democratic candidates have turned down an opportunity to discuss science, but accepted one to discuss faith. Both Democratic candidates have accepted an invitation to a bipartisan debate, called The Compassion Forum, on faith and moral issues to be aired by CNN on Sunday. Earlier this week, a bipartisan science and technology debate called Science Debate 2008 failed because all three candidates declined.
Hopefully this faith debate will discuss climate change, the health of our oceans, loss of biodiversity and the need to balance species loss with the needs of humans. I hope they discuss the failing health care system, stem cell research, medical research and health insurance coverage. Oh, and our food supply, genetically modified organism crops, educating children and securing jobs. Science and technology have driven half the growth of our economy since World War II. Yet by 2010, 90 percent of the world’s scientists will live in Asia. I hope the candidates discuss some of these very important issues during their debate on faith.
The science and technology debate would have discussed these important issues. If you want to find out more about the debate that is being supported by leading scientists, university presidents, industry leaders, company executives, government officials and Nobel Prize winners, check out its Web site at ScienceDebate2008.com.

A science debate? Talking about stem cells and the environment will only hurt the Democrats and lose them votes.
A Faith debate? Taking about how they believe in a virgin conception will only help the Democrats get votes from the nutty part of the country that voted G.W.B. into the Job.
Besides, I would expect a science debate between two lawyers to be pretty bad or rehearsed and unauthentic.

Instead we get to hear them talk about everyone’s favorite imaginary friend in the clouds: God.

The attendance at Dr. Lawrence M. Krauss’ Public Lecture last night was overwhelming. Where is the story on that?

Science is the “God” of the current era, it’s no different then some religions except the fact that some of its adherents believe in gross materialism and nothing else.

Justin:
Science is based on empirical evidence.
Religion is based on faith.
...do you see the difference here?

Who wants to move to Western Europe with me, where they’ve progressed to a state that doesn’t mix public policy and religion? Show of hands?
And the best part: all the doner kebabs and good beer you want!
