The MSU swimming and diving teams fell short Saturday at Purdue in their first 2008 matchup.

The Boilermakers earned a 181-119 victory over the men’s team and a 186-112 victory over the Spartan women.

Senior Adam Schmitt led the men’s team, placing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.38), the 100-yard freestyle (44.98) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.78).

Juniors Krzysztof Olszewski and Marcus Poteete and sophomore Jonathan LaRocque also placed first in their events. Olszewski took first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:48.87. LaRocque clocked in with 1:53.44 in the 200-yard backstroke and Poteete touched the wall in 50.28 to win the 100-yard butterfly.

MSU’s top breaststroke swimmer, freshman Kevin Puskaric, placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke before winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:01.09.

Heather Kiluk, a junior, took first in the women’s 200-yard IM with a time of 2:06.32. Freshman Stephanie Fisher nabbed the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.11.

Junior Danielle Williams placed second off both diving boards.

Both Spartan teams will be back in the water in a 5 p.m. dual meet Friday at Michigan.
