MSU wrestling wins big

An MSU wrestler experienced a whiff of victory in Sunday’s MSU Open at Jenison Field House.

After prevailing in the semifinal round with a 6-4 victory, Franklin Gomez went on to take first place in the championship.

Gomez, won 5-2 in the final round for the 133-pound weight class.

“I was going in (with the) mentality that I’m going to win, otherwise why wrestle if I don’t think I’m going to win,” Gomez said. “If God is with me, who is going to be against me?”

Eric Owlanoski placed second in the freshman/sophomore 125-pound bracket after winning by a major decision in the semifinal round and then losing 5-3 in the match for first place.

Owlanoski scored 25 points total for the team in the invitational.

Joe Williams won the semifinal round in overtime for the 197-pound weight class with a 7-6 victory.

Williams lost the final round 5-3 for his bracket and ended with second place overall and a total of 26 points for the team.

The wrestling team will compete again Nov. 17 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, N.C.
