After a 4-0 week for MSU baseball, two Spartans received honors for their contributions throughout the week. Junior outfielder Brandon Hughes collected two national honors after a breakout performance against Illinois, belting three home runs in the final game. Freshman outfielder and left-hander Bryce Kelley also received his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor.
Hughes, who contributed three home runs and seven RBIs in Sunday's game at Illinois, was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week and was also a recipient of USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Gold Standard Performance of the Week. The Sterling Heights, Mich. native knocked in 12 RBIs during the weekend series.
Kelley batted .462 on the week and collected three RBIs on six hits. Kelley scored five runs throughout the week as well. The Rockford, Mich. native is the second MSU baseball player to be recognized for Big Ten honors this season, with senior infielder Dan Durkin named Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 20.
Hughes and Kelley helped propel the Spartans to a 4-0 week, boosting their overall record to 15-5. With a perfect 3-0 record in the Big Ten, MSU is now ranked first in the conference standings. The Spartans will take on Western Michigan University at home on March 28 before beginning a three-game series versus Minnesota at home from March 31 to April 2.
