Just four games into the 2016-17 regular season, MSU softball pitcher and outfielder Celeste Wood is already making herself known among the best in the Big Ten.

On Monday, Wood was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week along with the University of Illinois' Annie Fleming.

This is Wood's first career Player of the Week honor and marks the first Spartan to receive such honor since Lindsey Hansen on March 7, 2011.

A native of Hacienda Heights, Cali., Wood registered a .556 batting average, .667 on-base percentage and a 1.333 slugging percentage for MSU as the Spartans recorded a 3-1 record at the Florida Atlantic Kickoff Classic last weekend.

In the four-game tournament, the 5-foot-11 sophomore logged two triples, a home run and eight RBIs.

On Feb. 11, Wood delivered a walkoff two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Spartans' 6-4 victory over N.C. State.

The Spartans will now face Villanova on Friday at 4:30 p.m. to kickoff their second tournament of the season — the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational in Madeira Beach, Fla.
