Mateen Cleaves is dismissed of sexual assault charges

December 5, 2016

Former MSU basketball player Mateen Cleaves was released after the judge found no sufficient probable evidence in his sexual assault case, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

Cleaves, 39, was charge with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of unlawful imprisonment and assault with the intent to commit sexual penetration and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The State News reported on March 15 that the alleged sexual assault claims happened in October 2015, in Genesee County, Mich.

Reported by the Detroit Free Press, Cleaves allegedly assaulted a woman after she met him at a charity golf outing. After having drinks with Cleaves at a bar, she said Cleaves pulled her back twice into a hotel, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted.

Cleaves is a former basketball player for MSU during their NCAA National Championship victory in 2000.
