A new fast casual pizza restaurant has been leased downtown in the old The State News office at 437 E. Grand River Avenue.
Blaze Pizza is projected to open spring 2017, Rachel Albritton, public relations representative for Blaze Midwest, said.
Albritton said they just recently signed the lease and are in the early stages of planning the restaurant.
“We haven’t even broken ground yet on the location and so depending on how long it takes to build the restaurant basically will determine when we open it,” Albritton said. “If everything goes according to plan, it will be spring of next year.”
Shawn O’Brien, senior vice president of brokerage services at CCIM, confirmed Blaze signed a lease in early November. He said the space will be 3,025 square feet.
Blaze Pizza, described as “fast fire'd” pizza on its website, specializes in 11-inch personal pizzas made-to-order. Customers choose toppings down the line, then the pizza is cooked in an oven in three minutes.
The location will have a free pizza day on its second day of operation, Albritton said.
“Literally, from open to close we will give away free pizza all day,” she said. “It’s a really great way to introduce ourselves to the community. If people haven’t had fast casual pizza before sometimes it can be confusing. We want to get people in the store to try it for the first time.”
Albritton said Blaze will be a good fit in East Lansing because of the demographic of both millennials and families.
“Nowadays, millennials are not just demanding value in their meals but also high quality ingredients and a commitment to sustainability, which we have,” she said. “In addition to that, we’re family friendly. Blaze is a great concept because for the first time ever, families don’t have to compromise. Dad can get what he wants, mom can get what she wants and the kids can get their pepperoni or whatever it is they want. Everyone is happy when they leave and no one has to sacrifice.”
