The MSU women's tennis team was defeated by No. 6 University of Michigan 5-2 on Saturday in East Lansing. The match kicked off the team's Big Ten season.

The team started the match with a close loss in the doubles point. MSU's top doubles team of Erin Faulkner and Allie Baer won their set, 6-3. However, U-M's second and third doubles teams defeated Spartan opponents to claim the doubles point for U-M.

The two wins for the Spartans came from Emily Meyers and Athena Trouillot. It was the second consecutive match win for Trouillot. Meyers claimed her team-best 10th singles win of the season.

The team has just completed an eventful start to the non conference season. They started off their season hot, achieving a No. 69 ranking, but faced a setback when the team van was robbed before a game at DePaul. The Spartans have an 8-5 record overall.

The next match for the women's tennis team will pit them against No. 63 Purdue. The match will take place Saturday at noon in East Lansing.

Four matches are on the docket for the Spartans through nine days, beginning with the Purdue matchup. MSU has a quick turnaround after Saturday's match, as they will face Indiana at home on Sunday. Road matchups against Minnesota and Wisconsin on April 1 and 3 close out the run.
