Deputy Police Chief Jeff Murphy named interim chief of ELPD

June 11, 2015

East Lansing Deputy Police Chief Jeff Murphy will serve as the interim chief of the East Lansing Police Department following the retirement of current chief Juli Liebler at the end of June, City Manager George Lahanas announced in a press release Wednesday.

Murphy has been with ELPD since February 1987 and during his extensive career there, has served as a supervisor in numerous specialized units, including the night shift patrol, Special Response Team, Crime Scene Investigation unit, detective bureau and K9 unit. Murphy was promoted to sergeant in Sept. 1998, lieutenant in June 2011 and captain in July 2012. He was promoted to his current position of deputy police chief earlier this year.

"Deputy Chief Murphy has a great deal of supervisory experience within the department and we have utmost confidence in his ability to serve as the interim chief of ELPD," Lahanas said in the press release. "Deputy Chief Murphy has proven to be a highly-skilled professional within the organization and has earned the respect of those who have worked alongside him."

Murphy is set to begin work at the position on July 1.

In the meantime, according to the press release, Lahanas will assess internal leadership for the permanent position. The last three police chiefs of ELPD have been internal candidates and city officials do not anticipate conducting a search for the next one.

"We have a long tradition of promoting within," Lahanas said. "We believe by doing so, we end up with good quality employees who have the skills, experience and background to be extremely successful in their careers with the City of East Lansing."
