In the annual Jan Howard Memorial Breast Cancer Awareness Meet the MSU women's gymnastics team was defeated by the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday evening, despite a valiant effort.

"Highlight of the day we made through the event called vault," head coach Kathie Klages said "Two of our top vaulters (are) out right now (in) Alina Cartwright and Ashley Noll."

The Spartans began the night on the vault with junior Nicola Deans coming in first in the competition, while MSU was on the vault, Minnesota had a quality team performance on the bars. Through one competition each Minnesota lead the Spartans 49.125-49.100.

"I thought today went really well on vault, the last few times I was out there I was a little shaky, I was looking to get that 9.900 and that's a career high for me so I'm pretty happy about that," Deans said.

In the second event of the night for MSU Junior Lisa Burt nailed her bars routine, earning the best individual result with a 9.900. The Golden Gophers looked great on the vault earning a score of 49.225, while the Spartans earned a 48.800 on the bars. Through two events Minnesota lead MSU 98.350- 97.900.

"I thought I was really good (on bars), I think my teammates and (the fans) cheering really loudly really helped me," Burt said. "I think I did really well today, I'm really happy with the performance."

The third rotation of events had the Spartans on the beam and Minnesota on the floor. Minnesota kept up a strong night, with another 49+ score earning a 49.125 on the floor while the Spartans earned a 48.850 on the beam. Through three rotations Minnesota still held the lead with a score of 147.475-146.750.

The fourth and final rotation of the night put MSU on the floor and Minnesota on the beam. Minnesota continued a strong night as the Golden Gophers earned a 49.400 on the beam. The Spartans had a solid 49.000 on the floor with sophomore Elena Lagoski finishing second overall in the individual results with a 9.900.

Minnesota junior Lindsay Mable won the all-around with a 39.575, Burt was a close second falling just short of her third straight all-around, finishing with a 39.475.

"Lisa Burt again had a superb meet, she won bars, took (third on the floor), she had another great meet," Klages said. "We're so proud of her, second in the all-around behind Lindsay Mable by just a tenth or so and Lindsay is an outstanding athlete."
