ASMSU looks to allocate $100,000 for February concert

October 21, 2014

A concert might be coming to MSU, sponsored by ASMSU.

ASMSU’s finance committee approved a bill Oct. 16, to be voted on by the general assembly this Thursday, to hold a concert in February for MSU students.

The bill would allocate up to $100,000 from the special projects fund and would be planned by the ASMSU central staff with the advice and consent of the ASMSU president. Any revenue that would be generated from ticket sales will be returned to special projects.

Part of the reason why the concert would be held is due to the general lack of student interest in the activities of ASMSU and the event seeks to both expand student interest in ASMSU and enhance the MSU community image, according to the text of the bill.

A concert is high on the list of requests from students, ASMSU officials have said.

“Typically when we talk to constituents and kind of see what they want in terms of events ... a very, very, very common one is always concerts,” ASMSU Chief of Staff Kiran Samra said. “As ASMSU, naturally it’s our job to represent the student voice and what the students want.”

The first major concert of the year was planned to be Wiz Khalifa at the Breslin Center on Sept. 13, but because of safety concerns stemming from a shooting at one of the hip-hop artist's previous concerts, officials decided to cancel the event.
