Student loses more than $1,500 to email phishing scam

Between June 5 and June 20 a 20-year-old student was victim to an email scam, robbing her of $1,536 via Western Union money transfer transactions. The correspondence turned out to be a phishing scam.

The student began correspondence with a fraudulent company offering employment via email, an employee at IT Services reported to MSU police. The student applied for a position after doing research on the company. 

The student believed the company was legitimate. The student sent several emails and received replies from the company. 

The incident is still under investigation.
