Hockey beats OSU in shootout

January 11, 2014

Through the stellar play of sophomore goaltender Jake Hildebrand, MSU fought to a 1-1 tie with a shootout victory for the additional point. MSU earned two points in the Big Ten through the shootout victory, with Ohio State earning one point.

Hildebrand came up big in the shootout stopping four of the six OSU (11-6-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) shooters, with junior forward Tanner Sorenson scoring the game winner in the shootout, giving the Spartans a 3-2 shootout victory. Sophomore forward Michael Ferrantino and freshman forward Joe Cox also scored in the shootout.

This is the second time on the season that MSU (6-10-3, 0-2-2-2) won a shootout, beating No. 1 Minnesota (13-2-3, 3-0-1 Big Ten) on Dec. 6 in a shootout.

Junior forward Matt Berry remained hot on Saturday night, giving MSU an early 1-0 lead only 2:49 into the 1st period. Ferrantino and senior defenseman Jake Chelios had assists on the play.

The goal extended Berry’s scoring streak to four games, giving him five goals and one assist in the four-game stretch.

While MSU wasn’t able to find the back of the net in the second period, the Spartans had a successful period holding Ohio State to only three shots all period and killed off a 5-on-3.

After nearly 50 minutes of scoreless play, the Buckeyes snuck one past Hildebrand. With 11:50 left in the third period, Buckeye junior forward Darik Angeli scored off a Spartan turnover in the defensive zone, with assists from sophomore forwards Anthony Greco and Tyler Lundey.

Hildebrand was the first goalie in the last 10 games to keep a top-ranked Ohio State offense under three goals, making 28 saves.

MSU will be back on the ice next week on Friday when Penn State (4-10-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) comes to Munn Ice Arena for a two -game home series.
