Spartans heading to Indy after clinching division title

November 23, 2013

The Spartans are going back to Indianapolis.

No. 13 MSU claimed the Legends Division title and booked its trip to the Big Ten Championship Game with its 30-6 win against Northwestern.

For the second time in the past three seasons, the Spartans will head to Lucas Oil Stadium to battle for the conference crown – likely against undefeated No. 4 Ohio State.

Sophomore quarterback Connor Cook threw for a career-high 293 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while junior running back Jeremy Langford crossed the 1,000-yard mark on the season with his 150 yards.

The MSU (10-1 overall, 7-0 Big Ten) offense got off to a slow start, falling behind 3-0 before Langford broke off a 20-yard touchdown to get the Spartans on the board midway through the second quarter.

On the next possession, Cook found senior wide receiver Bennie Fowler, who caught a bobbled ball behind the defender and cruised 87 yards to the end zone, giving MSU a 14-3 lead.

Northwestern (4-7, 0-7) cut into the lead with another field goal before halftime, which was highlighted by a tense interview with a salty head coach Mark Dantonio on the ESPN broadcast.

The reporter opened with a question about MSU’s dismal clock management at the end of the half, and Dantonio responded with “Ask me a different question.”

A six-play, 37-yard drive ended in a field goal from freshman kicker Michael Geiger before Cook threw his second touchdown to redshirt freshman tight end Josiah Price on a nifty play-action pass call.

For the third consecutive contest, Langford provided the dagger with a long run.

This version was a 37-yarder at the 12:37 mark in the fourth quarter to cap his sixth straight game of 100-plus yards.

With the division locked up, MSU can enjoy senior day at Spartan Stadium against Minnesota next week before the championship showdown on Dec. 7.
