East Lansing city councilmember Kevin Beard unexpectedly announced Tuesday he will not be running for reelection this fall, citing unspecified “professional opportunities.”
In an interview with The State News, Beard said he will be stepping down to pursue a new employment opportunity. He said it is related to his prior employment with General Motors, but declined to discuss specifics because he still is in negotiations.
During his 31-year career with the company, Beard specialized in human resources and training. He graduated from MSU in 1983.
His eight-year service saw the 2008 Cedarfest riots, the passage of citywide party litter and snow removal ordinances and the controversial City Center II redevelopment project near the corner of Grand River and Michigan avenues.
