One individual has been arrested and three others have been ticketed following the series of furniture fires set after MSU’s loss to Duke in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
On Thursday, East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy said following the arraignment police will release the name of the individuals involved, although media reports state a 22-year-old MSU student was arrested.
Murphy said the person is charged with inciting a riot and standing within 300 feet of a fire, where police said a group gathered at the site of a fire in the 700 block of Oak Street.
Police previously stated a couch fire took place earlier Saturday morning at 710 Oak St.
Murphy said three others were ticketed in relation to the fires set Saturday.
One individual was ticketed after reportedly lighting a Christmas tree on fire in his backyard. Police said two others were ticketed for attempting to light a television on fire, although the city attorney since has dismissed the charges for further investigation.
Police still are offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individuals involved with the fires.
Murphy said police are offering the reward in part to identify the suspects that gathered during the fires.
Police encourage anyone with information on the fires call the East Lansing Police Department at 517-319-6884 or email elpdtips@elpolice.com with their tip and phone number.
