Ruth Leyrer, owner of Bancroft Flowers, left, looks over her desk as she and her son Jacob Leyrer, right, test the new phone settings in their office, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Bancroft Flowers, 1417 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

The week before Valentine’s Day means extra work for Ruth Leyrer, who spends the holiday preparing floral arrangements.

“I have been in the business over 40 years, so I must be a glutton for punishment,” joked Leyrer, owner of Bancroft Flowers, 1417 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

These days, she splits her time running the 10-year-old business and designing arrangements.

Above her desk are photos of her son and daughter, who also work in the store. Even her grandchildren know how to make flower arrangements, she said.

“I let them be creative … I gave them a vase, I cut their greenery, and I say ‘OK, let’s see what we can do,” Leyrer said. “And there they go to town, and believe me, they are very pretty. They usually give it to their moms.”
