Neighborhood fitness centers to open next week

January 23, 2013

Neighborhood fitness centers will open in each neighborhood across campus next week, Director of Residence Education and Housing Services Kathy Collins at the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, general assembly meeting Wednesday night.

“The students were asking for them, so I think that this is something that we wanted to provide,” Collins said to the council at the general assembly meeting. “It’s a great way for students to get active and is stress reducing, and I think it’s good to encourage students taking care of themselves.”

The fitness centers will sport cardio equipment and will be comparable to the type of fitness centers seen in hotels, Collins said.

Also during the meeting, Collins said she is considering trying to turn the Wonders Hall fitness center into a complete gym with free weights, although there currently are no official plans drawn to add extra machinery.

“I’m a gym rat; I’m dreaming about what we can do with that space,” Collins said. “I’m going to pursue what we can do with that space.”
