Wrestling splits weekend against Wisconsin, Northern Illinois

December 8, 2012

The MSU wrestling team (2-2) hoped to come out of the weekend with two wins, but left with one win and one loss as they fell to Wisconsin on Friday, and defeated Northern Illinois on Saturday.

In the Big Ten opener for both teams, the Spartans lost to Wisconsin 19-12 on Friday night.

After eight of ten matches, the score was 13-12 with Wisconsin ahead by just one. Sophomore Nick McDiarmid then lost in the 197-pound weight class, and No. 10 junior Mike McClure lost his first match of the season to seal the win for the Badgers.

When the Spartans traveled to Northern Illinois on Saturday, it was a completely different story.

The Spartans only lost three matches the entire afternoon to cruise to a 25-9 win.

McClure got a bit of redemption when he pinned Jared Torrence, the Huskies heavyweight, to earn five points for MSU.

Sophomore Luke Jones got his first start of the season at the 197 weight class and responded in a big way, recording a major decision and getting 4 points for the Spartans.

MSU travels to Reno, Nev. on December 16 for the all day Reno Tournament of Champions before returning home on Jan. 4 to face off against Purdue.
