Before a national audience in the first game of the season, Bell established himself as the Spartans’ main offensive threat, carrying the ball a 2012 NCAA single game-high 44 times for 210 yards and MSU’s only two touchdowns. Bell’s signature moment of the season came early when three minutes into the game, he took the handoff, cut left and bolted up the middle of the field before he skyed over a Bronco defender for a 23-yard gain.

Although the Spartans didn’t pull out a win over the Cornhuskers, it was through no fault of Bell, who ran for 188 yards and two scores on 36 carries. Bell also ripped runs of 40, 26 and 23 in a losing effort.

In the game that eventually would clinch MSU a postseason berth, Bell went off in Minneapolis for a career-high 266 rushing yards and one touchdown on 35 carries. The performance netted Bell his third Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors, and just two days later, he was named first-team All Big Ten by both the media and coaches.
