First Makhi Frazier, then Nick Marsh, now Aidan Chiles.
On Monday, the Michigan State junior quarterback reported his intentions to enter the transfer portal, he told ESPN.
Chiles spent two-years under center for the Spartans, starting 20 games and accumulating an 8-12 record in that time frame. With MSU, he went 320-for-526 with 3807 passing yards and 23 passing touchdowns to 14 interceptions. He also carried the football 178 times, tacking on 452 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
After MSU’s week nine loss to Michigan, Chiles was benched for freshman quarterback Alessio Milivojevic. Chiles would not see the field again after that.
This is not the first time Chiles has entered the transfer portal. The once highly touted quarterback began his career under Jonathan Smith at Oregon State, where he saw limited action while serving as the team’s backup.
With the Beavers, Chiles completed 24 of 35 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns and added three rushing touchdowns. He transferred to MSU in December 2023, following Smith to East Lansing.
The hope was that Chiles would make an immediate impact with the Spartans. Coming out of high school he was ranked the seventh best quarterback and 58th best player nationally, per 257sports. When departing from Oregon State, he was ranked the 29th best transfer prospect nationally, per On3.
Per the rankings, MSU was expected to receive a quarterback who could flip the script and change the culture. Based on his play on the field, MSU instead got the opposite — a player who struggled with accuracy and turnovers and ultimately failed to win over the fan base.
In the two weeks since Smith was fired and Pat Fitzgerald was hired as MSU’s new head coach, Chiles has joined Frazier, Marsh and 11 other Spartans in entering the transfer portal.
Frazier, a sophomore running back, announced his intention to enter the portal on Nov. 30. Marsh, a sophomore wide receiver, followed on Dec. 1.
