MSU wins, despite poor play

The Spartan men’s soccer team added a win to its record over the weekend, downing Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis on Sunday, 2-1.Perhaps it was the sweltering heat, or maybe the fact that IUPUI (0-4) was shutout against Michigan in an 8-0 loss in its last game, but when MSU (2-1) took the field, it looked anything but prepared to do battle.“Even in the warm-ups we didn’t seem very spirited,” Spartan head coach Joe Baum said.

Future skaters take the ice

Dimondale - MSU’s coaching staff worked three long days this weekend while scouting some of the nation’s best junior players at the North American Hockey League’s second annual Face-Off at The Summit.But while the Spartans searched for their next prized recruit, the two guys MSU has already landed were able to prove their worth on the ice.Capital Centre Pride left wing Drew Miller tallied a hat trick and an assist Saturday, while his future Spartan teammate Tommy Goebel put in two goals for the Cleveland Barons during the second day of the three-day, season-opening NAHL event.All of the NAHL’s 11 teams, plus the Under-18 U.S.

Young skaters on display in Lansing

The North American Hockey League, a major producer of future college-hockey talent, will send all of its 11 teams to Lansing this weekend for the second annual Face-Off at The Summit, 9410 Davis Hwy in Dimondale. The Capital Centre Pride, Lansing’s Junior A hockey team, will host the event and will play at 7:30 p.m.

Rice head coach brings winning tradition wherever he travels

He has more wins than 98 of the 156 coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame, yet few outside the profession know his name. His 155 wins rank fifth among active Division 1-A coaches, but Rice head coach Ken Hatfield doesn’t put much stock in numbers. “That just means you’ve been around a long time,” the 24-year coaching veteran said.

Luck of Irish surprises Death Ro, McSkinny

After week one, Death Ro holds the title of No. 1, but McSkinny isn’t too far behind. Softball ready to go Just months after closing out its 2002 campaign, the MSU softball team has begun fall practice for its 2003 season. Last season, the Spartans ended their run with a 1-0 loss to Michigan in the conference finale. The Spartans finished 24-35 overall. This season, the team returns a number of players, including junior first baseman Natalie Furrow, junior third baseman Brittney Green, senior outfielder Tiffany Wallace and senior outfielder Sandy Lewis.

Lugnuts lose, look to win game three

Battle Creek - In the race to the divisional playoffs, the Lugnuts are taking it down to the wire.Lansing (38-34 second half, 76-66 overall) lost 3-1 to the Michigan Battle Cats on Wednesday, and will need to win today’s game to stay alive in the Midwest League playoffs.“That‘s a pretty good team on the other side,” Lugnuts manager Julio Garcia said of Michigan.
