Jones sets school record in tourney

Senior Tammy Jones set the school record in the 100-meter butterfly at the Big Ten Championships on Friday in Bloomington, Ind. Jones' time of 55.07 seconds was good for ninth place in the race. She also finished 11th in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 50.60 seconds Saturday. Freshman Danielle Williams placed 17th in the 3-meter diving competition and junior Courtney Ellabarger finished 23rd in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Football practice to be open April 16

MSU fans will be allowed to attend spring football practice at 1 p.m. April 16 at Spartan Stadium. But because of the additions and constructions to the stadium, seating will be limited to the east stands. The open practice will take place in conjunction with the third annual youth football clinic being held at the Duffy Daugherty Football Building from 10 a.m.

Three MSU basketball players have earned academic honors this week. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Basketball First Team has named junior forward Liz Shimek to the team, along with junior guard Lindsay Bowen, who received second-team honors.

The effects of the canceled National Hockey League season go far beyond just affecting the NHL players - there are many secondary effects in relation to the future careers of drafted college players and the NHL Entry Draft. Following Commissioner Gary Bettman's official cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL season Wednesday, players worldwide are all playing a wait-and-see game, including many current Spartans. Senior captain Jim Slater, a first-round 2002 draft pick of Atlanta, faces an uncertain professional career with the current position of the NHL's negotiations. "Until they get everything situated and figured out, then you can't really tell," Slater said of the affect the lockout might have on him. With the Big Ten regular season coming to a close, the No. 9 MSU women's basketball team cannot afford a slip up anywhere along the way. This holds true for tonight, when the Spartans (22-3 overall, 11-2 Big Ten) wrap up their three-game road trip in Iowa (16-7, 5-7), a team they beat easily earlier this year. "We really need to pressure them a lot and wear their legs out," junior guard Lindsay Bowen said.
