Harwell comes to E.L. for signing

Ernie Harwell just began his 55th season of broadcasting major league baseball, and today the hall-of-famer will share some of his memories at a book signing on campus. Harwell will make an appearance at MSU-Detroit College of Law from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

U splits weekend series with Hoosiers

With a win Sunday, the MSU baseball team salvaged a split in its four-game series with Big Ten leader Indiana at Kobs Field.The Spartans (22-8 overall, 6-5 Big Ten) started slow Sunday, but outlasted the Hoosiers (26-8, 8-4) 10-6.

Leading up to the playing of the Masters, the attempt at “Tiger-proofing” Augusta National generated a lot of buzz. Clearly, if Tiger-proofing really meant giving Woods a better chance at winning, then the proofing was a success. U sends 2 runners to NCAA Championships

Two distance runners will represent MSU at the 2002 NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La. Sophomores Jamie Krzyminski and Michelle Carson will compete in the 10,000-meter race at the championships May 29-June 1. The two qualified for the championships at the Stanford Invitational on March 29.

Spartans look to continue winning streak at home

After a successful road trip, the MSU softball team brings its season-best nine-game winning streak back to East Lansing. With momentum under their belts, the Spartans (20-21 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) host Wisconsin (21-13, 4-4) at 4 p.m.

The Spartans are looking to extend their three-game winning streak this weekend when they host conference leader Indiana.MSU (20-6 overall, 4-3 Big Ten) kicks off a four-game series against the Hoosiers (24-6, 6-2) at 3 p.m.

Lugnuts shut out at home

Lansing - A six-run barrage in the top of the fourth was more than enough cushion for Dayton, as the Dragons downed the Lansing Lugnuts 6-0 at Oldsmobile Park on Thursday evening. Dayton starting pitcher Brad Salmon (1-1) went eight scoreless innings in picking up the win, giving up just two hits while striking out five and walking none. Lansing manager Julio Garcia said there’s no question Salmon was the difference. “He really didn’t give us many good pitches to hit,” Garcia said.

Newton expects to remain at U

MSU assistant coach Tom Newton, who expressed interest in becoming Bowling Green’s next head coach, said Wednesday that he doesn’t expect to be offered the job. “It would really shock me,” Newton said from his home.

Spartans pound Lakers with offensive explosion

Not even a 7-foot fireballer could cool down the Spartan bats Wednesday night at Kobs Field.When southpaw Nathan Barden took the mound against the MSU baseball team (20-6 overall, 4-3 Big Ten) he couldn’t have imagined the Spartans would outscore his Grand Valley team 20-2.But Barden lasted just three innings for the Lakers (14-7, 6-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), surrendering six runs and eight hits.Six different Spartans hit home runs as the team launched a season-high seven over the fence.

Lugnuts close out series with 8-3 win over Whitecaps

The Lansing Lugnuts continued its trend of scoring early and often in its 8-3 victory Wednesday over the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Lugnuts (5-2) took three of four from the Whitecaps (3-4) in the opening series at Oldsmobile Park. Lansing scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, only to follow with two more in the bottom of the second inning.

Spartans join U.S. national team

The red, white and blue of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team added a little green and white for its upcoming exhibition season. Former Spartan outside hitter Erin Hartley and assistant coach Todd Dagenais will represent America on April 18-20 as the national team begins the exhibition season with three games against China’s Tianjin. “Ever since I was little I wanted to play for the U.S.
