CB Hayes suspended for unknown reasons

This weekend, MSU football head coach John L. Smith suspended senior cornerback Jaren Hayes for an indefinite period of time. The suspension was for an off-field incident, and it prevents Hayes from participating in any football-related activities. MSU Associate Athletics Director John Lewandowski said there is no timetable for Hayes' return to the team.

Tour team on its way to undefeated streak

The Big Ten Foreign Tour team and MSU juniors center Katrina Grantham and guard Victoria Lucas-Perry are still undefeated after winning two games over the Netherlands National Team. In a 107-52 win, Grantham had six points and two rebounds, while Lucas-Perry had five points and a team-high five assists. In an 88-52 victory in Amsterdam on Thursday night, the team improved to 3-0 before they headed to Belgium to play the Belgian National Team on Saturday night.

Shimek to start training

In the next week, MSU could respectively place one woman and one man on the USA World University Games Team and the USA Basketball Men's under-21 Team. From today through Friday, MSU junior guard Shannon Brown will be trying out for the men's under-21 team in Dallas.

Spartans score in Big Ten Foreign Tour

MSU junior center Katrina Grantham and junior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry had solid performances in their first game on the Big Ten Foreign Tour team. The two players helped the team to a 119-56 win against the Netherlands National Team in the opening game of the team's tour Tuesday night with a combined 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Spartans get verbal commit for fall 2007

After attending MSU football camp from Sunday through Tuesday last week, Lowell High School junior-to-be quarterback Keith Nichol decided it was the right time to give a verbal commitment to attend MSU in 2007. "There wasn't one coach that I didn't like," Nichol said Thursday.

Mason names former Notre Dame assistant as baseball coach

It took MSU athletic director Ron Mason four weeks to find the next MSU head baseball coach, but on Wednesday morning at the Kellogg Center he announced David Grewe will take over that position. "The final decision was mine, but I had some help along the way from some baseball people that I trust," Mason said.

2 MSU golfers named to academic team

Junior Heather Rose and sophomore Kristen Polanski have been selected to the 2004-05 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team. Rose has a 3.43 grade-point average and has just finished her second season on the golf team.

MSU junior center Katrina Grantham and junior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry were named to the 2005 Big Ten Women's Basketball Foreign Tour Team on Thursday. "I am really excited about the opportunity to be in a different setting to enhance my basketball skills," Grantham said in a written statement.

Women's basketball gets transfer player

The MSU women's basketball team has a new member - and she's not a freshman. Guard Mia Johnson, who led Saint Louis University in the 2004-05 season with 17.1 points per game, has announced that she will transfer to MSU this fall.

MSU to host NCAA 2007 opening rounds

The NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Committee has selected MSU and the Breslin Center to host first- and second-round games for the 2007 NCAA Women's Basketball Championships. "We're exited as a department to host the first and second rounds," MSU Director of Athletics Ron Mason said in a written statement.

8 recruits join women's team for next season

The MSU women's soccer team will have eight new players in the fall, joining a team that went 12-8-1 in 2004. The eight players are defensemen/midfielder Kelley Amormino from Sterling Heights, forward Lauren Carter from Rochester Hills, goalkeeper Danielle Petri from Rochester Hills, midfielder Kristi Timar from Novi, goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege from Portage, goalkeeper Ashley Crandall from Glen Ellyn, Ill., goalkeeper Demaree Bruck from Loveland, Ohio, and midfielder Michelle Telebar from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. "We (are) very happy to have a great group of freshmen eager to come in and contribute to our program in the fall," head coach Tom Saxton said in a written statement.
