MSU Hockey kicks off season with 2-1 victory

Under the trappings and new gimmicks of a newly renovated Munn Ice Arena, MSU Hockey picked up right where they left off last season by defeating Western Ontario 2-1 Sunday evening. It didn’t take long for the Spartans to break the ice on the fresh season as freshmen center Cody Milan gave the Spartans an early lead just two minutes into the opening period.

Freshman running back LJ Scott honored by Big Ten

True freshman running back LJ Scott has been impressive early on in his time at MSU, but in the Spartans first conference game of the season Scott took his play to another level. He finished the game with career highs with 18 carries for 146 yards and two rushing touchdowns—all career highs.  The first 100-yard rushing performance of his young career was rewarded with Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.

BASKETBALL

MSU basketball adds recruit Miles Bridges

The highly-touted high school basketball prospect Miles Bridges has made his decision. Bridges, the ESPN 100 eighth ranked player in the class of 2016, will become a MSU Spartan. [ tweet ] Bridges, listed on ESPN at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, is a scout-rated five star recruit who played his high school basketball in West Virginia at Huntington Prep.

Valentine, Costello, Nairn Jr. named 2015-16 basketball captains

Men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo announced sophomore guard Lourawls ‘Tum Tum’ Nairn Jr., senior forward Matt Costello and senior guard Denzel Valentine as the 2015-16 team captains today. Izzo said each year the captains are selected in a different fashion, but this year the players voted. “It was voted on this time, you know every year I do it a little differently to be honest with you, and they all got a lot of votes but you know (Valentine) got every vote on the team.
