SPORTS

From the road

Men's hoops reporter Tom Keller writes about his overnight trip to Ann Arbor. With no class Wednesday, I trekked over to Ann Arbor a day before the MSU-Michigan game and spent the night at a friend's place.

Icers, U-M: rounds 3, 4

Both their CCHA and overall records are almost identical. Three of the past four games against each other have ended in draws. Eight of their past nine meetings have been decided by a goal or less. That's just a slight indication of how evenly matched the Wolverines and Spartans are on the ice.

Izzo softer on U-M, but still wants win

He's not going to start singing "Hail to the Victors" anytime soon, but head coach Tom Izzo says he's not the same coach who let his hatred for Michigan "gnaw" at him earlier in his career. "I don't like Michigan — who's kidding who?" Izzo said.

Overdue shutout overshadowed by team's injuries

Deep into the NHL season, only one word that can sum up my fantasy hockey team so far — sucky. Fifth out of 12 teams isn't bad, but considering that I had the first overall pick in the draft and tons of expectations to meet when questioned about my abilities to draft a fantasy winner, I'm disappointed. A huge reason for inconsistences is injuries.

Can team survive with Ager's woes?

MSU head coach Tom Izzo was pleased with his team's performance in the Spartans' 85-55 domination of Iowa on Saturday. The win marked the Spartans' fourth against a ranked team in seven tries this season, a feat that was hard to come by in previous years. On top of that, the defense is coming around.

Monday musings

• The MSU women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker Sunday when Ohio State's Jessica Davenport made a layup with less than a second left. Just saying — this probably wouldn't have happened if we had gotten the timekeeper from the 2001 MSU-Michigan football game to work this one. • The student who portrays the Northwestern State mascot, Vic the Demon, is recovering from a game injury suffered when a pep band member ran over him. When is this kind of abuse going to stop, America?

BASKETBALL

Passing by

Perfect? Maybe not quite. But No. 11 MSU was about as close as it could be on Saturday in its most lopsided win of the season, an 85-55 rout of No.

Pinned down

Fresh off defeating Pittsburgh 28-9 Friday night, the No. 16 MSU wrestling team couldn't keep the momentum going Sunday at Jenison Field House, losing to No.
