MSU men’s soccer improved to 4-1 during the weekend, as the Spartans blanked Hartford 3-0 in the opening game of the UMass Soccer Classic, then defeated UMass 3-0 Sunday afternoon to clinch the tournament.Senior goalkeeper Tyler Robinson continued his impressive season, making 13 saves in the victory over Hartford and five against UMass.

The Spartan men’s soccer team added a win to its record over the weekend, downing Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis on Sunday, 2-1.Perhaps it was the sweltering heat, or maybe the fact that IUPUI (0-4) was shutout against Michigan in an 8-0 loss in its last game, but when MSU (2-1) took the field, it looked anything but prepared to do battle.“Even in the warm-ups we didn’t seem very spirited,” Spartan head coach Joe Baum said.

With the addition of four new recruits and return of its top four scorers, the Spartan kickers look to improve last season’s 13-6-1 record, the best numbers the men have collected since the 1986 season when the squad went 13-7-1. Greg and Steve Doster of New Lenox, Ill., are members of the Chicago Magic Soccer Club and head coach Joe Baum says both are able to play multiple positions - Greg Doster plays in the backfield and his brother Steve plays in the midfield and on defense. “Greg is a very athletic, hard-nosed defender,” Baum said in a statement.

NCAA considers overtime rule change

A new proposal by the NCAA may change the way overtime games in men’s and women’s soccer will be decided.During its annual meeting in February, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules Committee proposed to eliminate ties by shortening the sudden-victory overtime periods and implementing penalty kicks if the game has not been decided.Currently, men and women play two 45-minute halves.

While the MSU men’s soccer players hustled in pregame drills for Sunday’s NCAA Tournament matchup with Indiana, head coach Joe Baum nonchalantly meandered across the field.Baum’s relaxed attitude was surprising, considering the game was bigger than any the Spartans had played since Baum was on the team 32 years ago.But behind that calm demeanor, Baum admitted he was living up the moment.“It was a great feeling,” he said.

Bloomington, Ind. - The MSU men’s soccer team met Indiana for the third time this season Sunday and the outcome was the same. Indiana (15-3-1 overall) defeated MSU 1-0 in the second round of the CAA Tournament on Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. With the loss, the Spartans’ first tournament season in 32 years is over, and fourth-seeded Indiana advances to the third round to play Rutgers. “I thought we were a little nervous early,” head coach Joe Baum said.

Mens team awaits news on NCAA, women reflect on season success

Any hopes the MSU women’s soccer team had of continuing its season were lost Monday when the NCAA announced the 64 teams that will make up the tournament bracket.But the men’s soccer team still has four days to wait and hope that its season had that little extra spark that would push it into the 48-team bracket.The men haven’t been in the tournament since 1969, though in 1967 and 1968 the team was NCAA co-champions.The goalkeeper for the co-champion teams, MSU’S current head coach Joe Baum, said he believes this team could hold its own against the teams he played on.“I think if you look at our team today, we don’t have any All-Americans, but we’re more solid throughout the lineup,” he said.
