Forward does 'unthinkable' racing to the crowd

It was Friday, and I thought all the fighting I would see that day would occur when I went to a World Wrestling Entertainment show at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Boy, was I wrong. Appalled can not even describe how I felt as I walked into my local Buffalo Wild Wings and witnessed what can only be described as the most heinous actions I have ever seen taken by an alleged "professional" athlete. Indiana Pacers All-Star forward Ron Artest did the unthinkable and actually raced into the crowd at The Palace of Auburn Hills and started beating on random people. All of this because some jerk in the crowd threw a cup that happened to hit him in the face (Not to condone that type of action or anything, but, seriously, nice throw.

Men's swim team gets win over W. Kentucky

Senior Justin Laskowski and junior Ian Clutten led the MSU men's swimming team to win over the Western Kentucky by 123-120 Saturday. Laskowski and Clutten each won two events and MSU improved to 2-4 with the win. Clutten won first-place honors in the 200 breaststroke with 1:54.74 and in the 200 individual medley with 2:06.31. In the diving events, Laskowski won one-meter event with 270.82 and three-meter event with 302.77. After a week of break, MSU will travel to Athens, Ga., to compete at the Georgia Invitational.

Volleyball team splits weekend on the road

With a final home weekend left, the MSU volleyball team recorded one win and one loss this past weekend at Northwestern and Wisconsin, respectively. Senior outside hitter Kim Schram led Friday's 3-0 win at Northwestern with a match-best 17 kills, four blocks and 11 digs.

'U' wrestler captures championship Sunday

Sophomore Andy Simmons took the MSU Open Championship on Sunday, while five other MSU wrestlers placed in the top four in their weight classes. Simmons defeated Ron Tarquinio of Pittsburgh by 6-2 to take the tournament championship.

Spartans overtake Rattlers, 104-72

MSU kicked off the basketball season Friday with an offensive assault against Florida A&M, winning 104-72. The Spartans got off to a quick start making 70 percent of their shots in the first half and took a 60-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Fans' involvement in Palace brawl unacceptable

In my, albeit short, time as a reporter covering sports, crime and politics, I've learned a few things about respect. There are two different types of people to respect: those who have earned it through intellect, ability and power; and those who have earned it though pure insanity. Ron Artest falls in both categories, but mainly the latter. Who in their right mind would hack Ben Wallace as he goes up for a pointless layup with less than a minute remaining in a game your team is winning by 15 points? Artest would.

Spartans face Tulsa in NCAA tourney at Okla.

The MSU men's soccer team will travel to Tulsa for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after coming off a stellar performance in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans (12-6-1) played solid defense en route to their first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship giving up just one goal in the three games they played in Ann Arbor last weekend. The Spartans will meet the Golden Hurricanes (10-6-3) for the first time in school history.
