In midst of tackling woes, MSU's Nicholson keeps hitting hard

A lack of tackling has been an issue for the MSU football team this year, and missed wrap ups have helped contributed to a woeful 109th in third-down defense and a highly uncharacteristic six sacks through six games. The past members of the “Spartan Dawg” defense have not had issues like this one, whether it be former linebackers like Max Bullough and Denicos Allen or secondary standouts like Trenton Robinson or Isaiah Lewis.

The MSU football team will travel to College Park, Md. for their second Big Ten road game and their third night road game of the season. They look to recover from a brutal homecoming loss and battle the University of Maryland Terrapins, who have lost their last two games after getting off to a hot 4-0 start under first year head coach D.J. Durkin.

MSU defensive front looking for a much needed spark in the pass rush

MSU football’s pass rush has been next to non-existent, only garnering a total of five sacks throughout their first five games. Players like junior Malik McDowell, a preseason All-American and senior Demetrius Cooper, whose five and a half sacks last season were supposed to translate to more production, have failed to get to the quarterback.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Tyler O’Connor took the podium in the media center of Spartan Stadium with the look that comes after three straight losses — he wasn’t happy. But even after being yanked in the fourth quarter in favor of junior quarterback Damion Terry, he kept his poise.
