Way to go, BCS. You finally got it right. The four major bowls have teams where they belong, and this year there is only one team that has a reason to complain about anything. Sorry Oregon, but an Ohio State-Notre Dame matchup in the Fiesta Bowl is a lot more intriguing than you against either one of those teams.

MSU hosts Detroit Mercy tonight

The MSU women's basketball team will hit the Breslin Center floor tonight having played only one game in the last 10 days. After a disappointing two-loss performance in the Paradise Jam, followed by an eight-day layoff before Sunday's 82-64 win over Pepperdine, the Spartans finally get back on a regular schedule with a 7 p.m.

Swimming and diving competes in Columbus

The MSU women's swimming and diving team earned fourth place in the Ohio State Invitational Sunday afternoon, while the men finished fifth. Senior Ian Clutten took third in the 200 breaststroke, senior Katrina Kniff took eighth in the 100 freestyle, freshman Heather Kiluk was 10th in the 200 backstroke and senior Erika Templeton was 11th in the 200 breastroke.

Icers snap 8-game winless streak, split series with BGSU

Bowling Green, Ohio — After breaking an eight-game winless streak Friday with a 3-0 win over Bowling Green, the MSU hockey team was outhustled and outplayed Saturday night as the Falcons salvaged a split with a 4-2 win at BGSU Ice Arena. MSU (6-7-4 overall, 3-5-3 CCHA) was without the services of junior captain Drew Miller (shoulder) and senior defenseman Jared Nightingale (sick), forcing MSU head coach Rick Comley into some lineup changes.

Clutten sets record in 100-meter breaststroke

Senior Ian Clutten set a Peppe Natatorium record on the second day of the Ohio State Invitational, clocking in with a time of 54.68 in the 100-meter breaststroke on Saturday. Clutten also competed in the 200 medley relay team with seniors Rudolf Wagenaar, Nick Harley and Matt Wisniewski.

Neitzel collects career-high 9 assists in homecoming game

Grand Rapids — It was a grand homecoming for Drew Neitzel. The sophomore guard, who once starred at Wyoming Park High School, returned to his old stomping grounds and was cheered loudly at every mention of his name. And to boot, he played well for the second straight game and helped the Spartans to a 72-67 win over Arkansas-Little Rock. "I will admit, I was looking forward to this game for a long time," Neitzel said.

Swimming, diving team signs 11 new members

Swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis is trying to bring the program out of the Big Ten cellar. He made big steps toward doing so this past week as he signed 11 recruits, six men and five women, to join the Spartans next season.
