Former Spartans icer shines with Penguins

The State News recently caught up with professional hockey player Adam Hall. The Pittsburgh Penguins forward and MSU alumnus saw his team fall to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals last week in a matchup that ignited an internal conflict for the Kalamazoo native.

Hoopers honored for sportsmanship

MSU graduates Drew Neitzel and Alisa Wulff were announced the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners on Wednesday. Neitzel, who graduated in May with a degree in interdisciplinary humanities, was a starting guard on the MSU men’s basketball team in each of the last three seasons and a co-captain his last two seasons.

Trio of Spartans selected in pro draft

Three Spartans were selected in Friday’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. Junior catcher Kyle Day was selected in the 12th round by the Cincinnati Reds, while the Detroit Tigers picked up junior pitcher Mark Sorensen in the 32nd round and junior utility player Eric Roof in the 46th round.

Ex-Spartan golfer stars on LPGA Tour

The State News caught up with professional golfer Allison Fouch as she prepares for this weekend’s McDonald’s LPGA Championship in Havre de Grace, Maryland. The 2004 MSU graduate won numerous awards while at MSU.

All-American Brown leaves MSU golf on top

Golfer Sara Brown ruled the links at MSU for four seasons. Now, the MSU graduate is getting all sorts of recognition for her excellence. Brown was named to the National Golf Coaches Association’s 2008 Women’s Golf All-American team on May 23.

MSU rowers finish 6th at NCAA championship

When the MSU rowing team finished sixth in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, they were overjoyed. But Sunday, when the team finished with the same results in the 2008 NCAA Tournament in Rancho Cordova, Calif., a different feeling overtook the team.

Kennedy skips senior year for NHL

Yet another Spartan icer has decided to leave MSU early to pursue a professional hockey career. On Sunday, MSU head coach Rick Comley announced that junior forward Tim Kennedy will leave MSU after signing a deal with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Former MSU goalie stars on and off ice

The State News caught up with former MSU and current NHL goaltender Ryan Miller on Wednesday. The East Lansing native has starred between the pipes for the Buffalo Sabers for the past four seasons. While at MSU, Miller set the NCAA record for career shutouts and was the recipient of the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nations best collegiate hockey player, in 2001. Off the ice, Miller also is starring in a new commercial for PepsiCo Inc.‘s Amp energy drink.
