After a huge win this past Sunday over Michigan, the Spartans looked to keep the momentum against Nebraska. The Spartans fell short and with only two games left heading into the Big Ten Tournament, there seems to be a lack of urgency and effort heading into the final stretch of the season.
To get the Spartans a Big Ten title, or to reach their goals of winning a National Championship, MSU coach Tom Izzo said he thinks point guard Cassius Winston has to be the man to step up.
On Valentine’s Day MSU looked to gain another quality win as the season closes as they hosted Nebraska in a neck and neck type of game. However, the Spartans fell short, 79-69.
Three days after passing what was likely their biggest test of the season thus far, and beating No. 6 Purdue at the Breslin Center, the second-ranked men’s basketball team went on the road and took care of business against Minnesota (14-14, 3-12 Big Ten).
The Spartans (25-3, 13-2 Big Ten) kept making one 3-pointer after another and hit 10 shots from deep in the first half to ease past Minnesota (14-14, 3-12) 87-57 at Williams Arena on Tuesday night.
A win against No. 2 MSU could salvage Minnesota’s season, and it would also end a seven-game losing streak. The Spartans (24-3, 12-2), however, are off to their best start since 2000-01 — when the team also got off to a 24-3 start — and looking to cut Ohio State’s lead in the conference standings to a half game.
In a tough and loud environment the women’s basketball team snapped their six game losing streak to rival Michigan on Sunday afternoon, 66-61. However, the Spartans currently sit at 15-11 on the season and 5-8 in the Big Ten.

On a packed Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center the women’s basketball team hosted their annual pink game against rival University of Michigan in support of breast cancer awareness.
Sunday afternoon showcased a packed Breslin Center with pink all-around the court as MSU hosted No. 21 Michigan in the annual pink game. The Spartans ended their six game losing streak by defeating the Wolverines, 66-61.
Saturday’s game was important for MSU for another reason that had nothing to do with the team’s title hopes or postseason aspirations. It was important because it was a night to honor legendary coach Jud Heathcote, who passed away last August at the age of 90.
With the ball in hand, Bridges, a 6-foot-7 standout from Flint who returned to East Lansing for his sophomore season, dribbled near the top of the key. Instead of driving past Purdue’s Dakota Mathias to layup the go-ahead shot, he decided to play hero.

Saturday seemed like a game the Spartans were destined to win. Between a memorial for former MSU basketball coach Jud Heathcote —who led the Spartans to the 1979 National Championship as part of a 19-year career in East Lansing, but died last August — and a recruiting visit from standout recruit Vernon Carey Jr., a sold out crowd at the Breslin Center erupted on a game-winning three pointer from forward Miles Bridges.
No. 4 MSU (23-3, 11-2) has not played a team as formidable as No. 3 Purdue (23-3, 12-1).
Heading into Thursday’s matchup against No. 10 Maryland the Spartans looked to snap their five-game losing streak, but instead extended it to six as it looks if though the offensive inconsistency and fatigue seems to be playing a huge role.
