MSU players, fans react to NHL's cancellation

The effects of the canceled National Hockey League season go far beyond just affecting the NHL players - there are many secondary effects in relation to the future careers of drafted college players and the NHL Entry Draft. Following Commissioner Gary Bettman's official cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL season Wednesday, players worldwide are all playing a wait-and-see game, including many current Spartans. Senior captain Jim Slater, a first-round 2002 draft pick of Atlanta, faces an uncertain professional career with the current position of the NHL's negotiations. "Until they get everything situated and figured out, then you can't really tell," Slater said of the affect the lockout might have on him. "I just love to play hockey and that's what I want to do, and if that means playing under new terms, then that's fine." Sophomore defenseman A.J.

With the Big Ten regular season coming to a close, the No. 9 MSU women's basketball team cannot afford a slip up anywhere along the way. This holds true for tonight, when the Spartans (22-3 overall, 11-2 Big Ten) wrap up their three-game road trip in Iowa (16-7, 5-7), a team they beat easily earlier this year. "We really need to pressure them a lot and wear their legs out," junior guard Lindsay Bowen said.

During the past few days, I've developed a severe case of sailor mouth. Sailor mouth, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, is when you start cursing like a sailor. I can't even begin to speak of NHL "commissioner" Gary Bettman or NHL Players Association Executive Director Bob Goodenow without letting loose "f-bombs" strung together in an incoherent sentence with names intertwined.

In recent weeks, the Spartans have started to find that to be consistent and win games, they need a lot of team players and team depth. Madison, Wis. - Balance was the key once again for the No. 9 MSU women's basketball team as the Spartans had four players in double figures, picking up their sixth win in a row over Wisconsin, 84-60. The Spartans (22-3 overall, 11-2 Big Ten) started to see their lead slip away early in the second half before junior guard Lindsay Bowen hit two 3-pointers in back-to-back trips down the floor to help pull away from the Badgers (10-12, 4-8). "We played a very good game against a solid Wisconsin team that never gave up," MSU head coach Joanne P.

Wrestling team drops to No. 19 Hoosiers

The MSU wrestling team, injured and flu-stricken, lost to No. 19 Indiana, 33-4, on Saturday. Junior Darren McKnight won his 28th match of the season, giving the Spartans their only victory of the day. Sophomore Nick Simmons started off the meet by losing his first match of the season.

Spartans swept by Nanooks

It was a difficult weekend of play for the MSU hockey team as the Spartans were unable to pick up any points on their trip to Alaska-Fairbanks and were swept courtesy of the Nanooks for the first time in history. After a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss Friday, and a 1-0 loss the next night, the Spartans are left in a tough spot in the CCHA standings, where they are tied for eighth place, and would have to go on the road for the playoffs if the postseason were to start today. "We play hard, we work hard and the positive is that we're not going to quit playing," MSU head coach Rick Comley said after Saturday's game. "The one thing we've done all year is play hard.
